Harpenden - A Hertfordshire town with a village feel

Harpenden is a picturesque and lively town situated 5 miles north of St Albans with a commute time to London St Pancras International in just 26 minutes!

With a population of around 30,000, Harpenden is still affectionately known as ‘The Village’. Surrounded by wonderful open countryside and benefiting from everything a town has to offer and much more! As you drive into Harpenden from the South along the A1081, you will be pleasantly surprised by its magnificent common, with a natural beauty that stretches for nearly 2 miles before reaching the centre of the town.

Harpenden offers easy access to the major airports, being within a 10 minute drive to Luton, 40 minutes to Heathrow, 45 minutes to Stanstead and a 76 minute direct train to Gatwick.

Harpenden boasts many high achieving Primary and Secondary Schools with both Private and State options, therefore attracting many families to the town.

There are all kinds of leisure activities in the area to enjoy, from horse riding, tennis, swimming, cricket, rugby, squash and golf, to rambling, bird watching, shows, films and much more.

Even just relaxing on the common with a glass of wine whilst watching a game of cricket!

The attractive Rothamsted Park, which covers an area of 56 acres, provides an excellent wide-open space for all to enjoy. Two major annual events take place in the park, the May Carnival and the Highland Gathering held in July, both extremely popular.

Although not a major shopping area, Harpenden has a good selection of shops, supermarkets, and independent retailers, numerous restaurants, coffee shops and pubs. It is extremely popular for the local residents to fill the coffee shops on the weekends relaxing with a hard earned cappuccino or two, whilst watching the world go by! There is also a farmers market held in the centre of town on the 4th Sunday of the month to stock up on locally produced cheeses, meats, vegetables, pies, preserves and much more. Enjoy an Ostrich burger whilst browsing the many stalls!

My experience…

Living in Harpenden as a family for many years has provided a perfect balance for all. Arriving home after a long day to such a picturesque town is simply a pleasure and I know I am “home”. Having also moved within the town, I have experienced how living in one area to another compare, and therefore better suit ones lifestyle dependent on the families circumstances and needs. The choice of location within the town is key to making the move successful. Whether the priority is a particular school for the children, or a short walk to the station for instance, making the right choice of area is imperative to making the move work for all concerned.

I have educated my children here, made many special friends and enjoyed the lifestyle the town offers. And yes! I am one of those who enjoy the wonderful coffee shops and restaurants, family cycle rides along the many cycle routes, easy access to London for shopping and visiting friends as well as regular more local retail therapy trips to Watford and Welwyn Garden City. I love the open countryside practically on the doorstep for walking or just simply enjoying the peace and quiet when in need of some "de-stressing time".

Harpenden is a very special place to live and everyone I speak to who knows about the town, always speaks very highly of it. The many clients I have introduced to the town are simply amazed by it's beauty and the warm friendly feel the town offers.
