St Albans to St Pancras in 20 minutes….

Yes it’s true! If you are considering moving out of London for a more relaxing home life after a hard days work, St Albans in Hertfordshire has a lot to offer. Why not have the best of both worlds!

St Albans is a historic market town around 22 miles north of central London and was one of the largest towns in Roman Britain. The train journey on the First Capital Connect line to St Pancras takes 20 minutes! Often, travelling to work living within London can take a lot longer.

It’s also very conveniently located for easy access to the major airports, being within a 10 minute drive to Luton, 30 minutes to Heathrow, 50 minutes to Stanstead and a 70 minute direct train to Gatwick.

St Albans is a very popular place for families, not only for the many high achieving Schools with both Private and State options but also for the abundance of activities on offer from cycling, walking, golfing, swimming, fishing and many more sports, leisure and cultural experiences, enabling families to enjoy quality time together. No reason for the kids to ever say "I'm bored" again!

If eating out suits your lifestyle there are around 120 restaurants, Bistros, coffee shops and pubs (apparently the most pubs per square mile in England). A favourite of mine when the kids were growing up, was The Waffle House, located within a working 16th century watermill overlooking the River Ver, finishing with a stroll around the wonderful Verulamium Park which is set in over 100 acres of parkland. … A good way to work off those amazing sweet and savoury Belgium waffles!

Shopping in St Albans is refreshingly different with a mix of speciality boutiques, independent retailers and major stores. You can also experience the extremely popular, colourful and vibrant, twice weekly Street Market, as well as the Farmers Market which is held in the centre every 2nd Sunday of the month.

Do visit the St Albans Cathedral and Abbey, a very impressive building that cannot be missed when entering the City and a must see.

If you are looking for an even quieter and peaceful location, there are many picturesque towns and villages surrounding St Albans that are also very popular for commuters who enjoy coming home to the wonderful green open spaces and relaxing after a busy day in the City.

My experience…

Having relocated from London to Hertfordshire myself, St Albans was the first area I chose to live and I can honestly say, it was the perfect location. I found the transition from the hustle and bustle of busy London life to St Albans living very easy to adjust to and in fact “simply refreshing”. We lived within walking distance of the City Centre and enjoyed starting a family there and never looked back! Many years on we are still living in Hertfordshire and enjoying the best of both worlds, as our trips to London visiting friends, going to see London Shows etc., are so easily accessible by car or train, and it is always a joy to come back home and be surrounded by beautiful countryside.
